After traditional liposuction, it can take weeks – sometimes even months – for a patient to heal. The treated area can hurt and the patient might have trouble getting around.

Alternatives to traditional liposuction can produce similar results with little or no downtime. SmartLipo LaserBody Sculpting is one such procedure. This laser procedure is FDA-approved and does not require the use of general anesthesia. The incision(s) used is only one millimeter in size, making it less invasive than traditional liposuction methods. The cannula, or instrument which houses the laser fiber, is inserted into the incision to destroy the fat by actually heating, melting and liquifying the fat cells. The laser is then brought up right underneath the dermis of the skin to stimulate collagen production which has a tightening effect to correct and prevent sagging.
SmartLipo doesn’t simply shrink fat bulges and loose skin; it also shrinks recovery time down to two to four days. Most patients can return to work activities within two- four days of the treatment. Additionally, the procedure is virtually pain-free.

After the SmartLipo procedure, the patient relaxes in a recovery room until the local anesthesia wears off. Typically, patients are able to return home within an hour. Patients are provided with compression garments after the procedure to aid in lymphatic drainage, reduce swelling and to enhance the patient’s results. Over-the-counter pain medication or prescription medicine is available for any lingering pain.

CoolSculpting is anon-invasive procedure for weight loss and body sculpting. This treatment is not for the obese, but it does remove those stubborn fat bulges that do not respond to exercise.

Compared to traditional liposuction and SmartLipo, CoolSculpting takes longer to see the results – starting at three weeks to four months after the procedure. However, there is virtually no pain, risks nor is there any recovery time. Patients are permitted to return to normal activities, including work and exercise routines, immediately. The treated area may experience mild cramping, become red or possibly bruised. There may also be tingling or a dulling of sensation in the treated area, but all side effects will lessen with time and disappear completely after six weeks.

CoolSculpting destroys fat cells by freezing them and then they are removed by your bodies own natural waste system. As long as healthy habits are maintained, the results should remain permanent, just as with traditional liposuction or SmartLipo procedures.

You might be wondering whether the CoolSculpting procedure is worth it. You eat healthy. You exercise regularly. But you still have that stubborn pouch of fat that just won’t go away. You’ve heard that you can see about a 20% fat reduction in the treated area***. You’ve heard that it is virtually painless. It sounds too good to be true. How can you know for sure? Just ask CoolSculpting patients what they think of the procedure.

Christine in Kennewick, WA is a 66-year-old cancer survivor and self-proclaimed health nut. She had fat bulges that would not disappear with healthy eating or exercise. “Even cancer could not get rid of them,” she says. But CoolSculpting by Zeltiq did the trick. She did not want to chance her health with drugs, so conventional liposuction was out. But after her procedure, she has no bulges and has actually firmed up in those areas.

A patient in New York City heard about CoolSculpting through a plastic surgeon and personal friend, Dr. Trevor Born. Dr. Born was enthusiastic about the possibilities of CoolSculpting and recommended it to the patient. It sounded like something from a science fiction movie. He wondered, “could freezing fat actually work or was it another one of the many cosmetic procedures that over promise and under deliver?” But since Dr. Born rarely made recommendations, the patient decided to try it. The procedure proved to be painless, but was long. However, there was no downtime, no scarring, and no bruising. The patient noticed visible results in only two weeks and after two months, his love handles were much less pronounced. He even made an appointment for a second round of CoolSculpting to enhance the results.

Robin in Williamsville, NY had three cycles of the CoolSculpting procedure done after she gave birth. She is very pleased with the results and can’t believe “how many other people actually could tell how much flatter [her] stomach is.” She was satisfied that there was no downtime and that she felt very little tenderness following the procedure.

It’s always best to research a procedure prior to scheduling it and seeing reviews from real patients can often alleviate any worries or misconceptions that one might have.

***Although when the patient’s treated area shows a 20% reduction in the fat layer, the patients often reported seeing a 50% reduction when polled.

Since both varicose veins and spider veins are the result of venous reflux disease, they can both be caused by similar activities. Standing on your feet for long periods of time, for instance, may cause either or both conditions. Crossing your legs can also affect the blood flow in the legs.

The conditions are caused when the valves within the vein become weak and damaged. They do not close properly. So when the patient stands up, the blood flows down with gravity rather than returning up the leg to the heart. Some individuals are predisposed to varicose and spider veins, either by having too few valves in their veins or inherent weakness in the vein walls.

Both varicose veins and spider veins are the result of the vein’s inability to push blood back to the heart. As a result, blood tends to pool in the leg veins instead of circulating through the body. The veins near the surface of the skin become visible, often purple in color or bulging.

There is, however, a difference between the two conditions. Spider veins appear as a thin web of veins ranging in color from red to purple to blue. They rarely cause any physical problems, but they can be quite obvious. Spider veins can cause embarrassment to the patient, prompting him or her to seek treatment through techniques such as laser sclerotherapy and injection sclerotherapy. These non-invasive procedures both destroy the vein causing the spider veins to decrease in appearance or disappear entirely.

Varicose veins are a more serious condition, often causing pain, throbbing, burning, muscle cramps, and fatigue. Affected veins tend to bulge from the surface of the skin, sometimes becoming tangled and knotted. In addition to the pain, varicose veins can endanger the patient’s health with conditions such as blood clots and leg ulcers.

Treatments for varicose veins include ELT (or endovenous laser treatment), VNUS closure, or micro-phlebectomy. Treatments have become much safer, especially with the development of laser tools.

Once varicose veins form, there is no way to cure them. Venous disease is progressive and often times genetic. The body is unable to repair the damage done; and medically, there is no pill or cream that can fix the affected veins. You can, however, take steps to prevent varicose veins from ever forming. Following an exercise program improves circulation, which can slow down varicose vein development. Other conservative methods of preventing spider veins and varicose veins are to maintain a healthy diet, take supplements, and eat a diet high in fiber.

Leg vein health can be improved by elevating your legs at night so that the blood does not pool in them. You should avoid birth control pills and refrain from wearing tight clothes, which may restrict your circulation. It is also recommended that you refrain from crossing your legs. Massaging the limbs can also assist circulation and vitamins C and E are known for relieving swelling.

Support stockings are the most common method alleviating symptoms, but there are procedures that actually lessen the appearance of spider and varicose veins while promoting vascular health

One such choice for reduction in spider vein appearance is laser sclerotherapy. In this treatment, the doctor uses a laser instrument that looks similar to a pen. He will touch it to your skin on a spider vein and you will hear a clicking sound. It will feel hot or like little pinches as the laser safely travels through your skin and closes off the vein. Blood will no longer flow through those veins, so they will no longer be a visible purple. Another similar option of injection sclerotherapy using either Sotradecol, Asclera or Saline to close off the vein, rather than a laser. Now there is a new option, VeinGogh, which delivers high frequency currents to the vessel via a hair-thin probe.

Varicose veins can be treated with ELT (or endovenous laser treatment), VNUS closure, or micro-phlebectomy. In ELT, a doctor threads a laser fiber through the affected vein, effectively closing it off and relieving symptoms. VNUS closure is quite similar, although it utilizes a radiofrequency generator that actually heats up to close off the vein. Micro-phlebectomy involves making a tiny incision in your leg and physically removing the vein.

SmartLipo is an amazing new treatment that can help you lose weight and tighten skin by permanently destroying fat cells. The body only has a certain number of fat cells, and it cannot grow more. Therefore, SmartLipo can make your body lighter and thinner, with no sagging skin.

SmartLipo was designed in Europe and has been approved by the FDA. It is a one-of-a-kind procedure that is fast outranking other liposuction procedures as safer, faster, and less-expensive – not to mention the fact that it produces better results.

SmartLipo uses a laser-assisted cannula – or a small, straw-like instrument – to melt away and drain fat cells from the treatment area. The incision only needs to be between one and two millimeters, the size of the cannula, making this procedure less invasive than most liposuction treatments.

But Smart Lipo is not for everyone. Candidates for this procedure must already be following a diet and exercise program and be within twenty-five pounds of their goal weight. They should have an area on their body that is not responding to diet and exercise, such as love handles, lower abdomen or saddle bags.

SmartLipo possesses numerous benefits over liposuction that go beyond price. For instance, SmartLipo has a laser guide, enabling the surgeon to make more exacting movements. After liposuction, many patients discover that their skin sags and no longer fits their new thin body. They are then required to get additional surgery to tuck the skin, which may result in scarring. SmartLipo, on the other hand, utilizes laser energy just below the dermal layer of skin to allow for better retraction as it removes the fat cells, essentially contouring and firming the treatment area.

Recovery time for SmartLipo is generally significantly less than it is for patients of other liposuction methods. Individuals may return to work within two days and gradually reintroduce exercise. Patient typically continue to lose weight after the procedure because it gives them the extra motivation to continue on the path of routine exercise and healthy eating.

The revolutionary SmartLipo treatment is not your typical cosmetic weight loss procedure. It is a body changing experience.

Laser treatments have proven to be safe and effective for many procedures that used to be treated surgically. Laser surgery is less invasive with less trauma to the patient and resulting in less complications than traditional scalpel operations.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (or ELT) is a laser vein treatment that is 99% effective in removing varicose veins. The doctor will thread a laser fiber through the length of an affected vein. The laser destroys the damaged vein, preventing blood flow to the area, thereby curing the leg of varicose veins.

Some minor side effects may occur with laser vein treatment, including bruising, numbness, and minor skin burn. However, these risks are uncommon. Even rarer is the chance of blood clots following the procedure. The occurrence of blot clots is only one percent following laser vein treatment, and physicians typically monitor patients using ultrasound to verify that no clots have formed.

The ELT procedure is less painful with faster recovery times than traditional methods. Local anesthesia is injected with a needle; however, a topical anesthetic cream may be used to lessen the pain. The anesthesia will numb the leg so that the patient does not feel any pain. The numbness will last a few hours after the procedure. Prescription pain medicine, such as ibuprofen, will be given to the patient to help manage pain and to reduce swelling. Some bruising at the injection site may occur.

Following the procedure, the patient must wear a compression stocking, which will also help reduce any lingering pain or swelling. Up to three days rest is usually recommended before returning to normal activities.

ELT is more effective than former methods of treating varicose veins. Traditional vein stripping treatments were not only more invasive, new veins often replaced the stripped ones, creating a need for further treatments. ELT completely removes the vein from circulation so that it cannot grow again.

Laser treatments for varicose veins are safer, less painful, and more effective than former treatments; and therefore, are the preferred vein treatment of most doctors.

Varicose veins are more predominate in women than men, occurring in twenty-five percent of women and fifteen percent of men. They typically appear on the backs of the calves to the inside of the legs, although they can appear anywhere on the leg. Varicose veins are enlarged, blue or purple in color, and tend to bulge. Spider veins are smaller and near the surface of the skin, resembling a spider’s web.

Many people consider varicose and spider veins to be just a cosmetic annoyance, but they can signal a bigger problem. Some people experience pain with varicose veins, which can be alleviated with treatment. Affected veins that are rather large can cause discomfort, a feeling of heaviness, and fatigue.

If blood flow continues to back up in the veins, one may experience sores or skin ulcers, which are difficult to heal and can be very painful. The skin over the varicose vein becomes thin and is more prone to injury. If the skin does tear, there will be a large amount of blood loss, since the vein is holding a backup of blood.

Varicose veins may also develop into a blood clot. A superficial thrombophlebitis is a vein clot that forms just below the skin. A deep vein thrombosis is usually deeper within the body, but also in a vein. While sometimes there are no obvious symptoms, other times patients may experience swelling and redness accompanied by a warm sensation. With deep vein thrombosis, patients sometime report a pulling in the calf area.

Blood clots can be very dangerous – even fatal. Seeking treatment can reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, or pulmonary embolism, which is a blockage in the lungs.

Seeking treatment for varicose veins can lessen risks associated with this condition and also restore the even appearance of the skin on the patient’s legs, improving self-esteem.

Varicose veins occur when the leaflet valves in the veins no longer work properly, allowing blood to flow backwards. This condition typically occurs in the legs, as the veins work against gravity to return blood to the heart and lungs. Affected veins become enlarged, appear blue or purple, and are often painful.

Some people are more prone than others to develop varicose veins. Pregnant women or people who are overweight are more likely to develop the condition because the extra weight puts a strain on leg veins. Varicose veins can be passed on genetically, can form with age, or may develop as a result of hormone changes.

People seek treatment for varicose veins whether they are painful or not, simply because they can be unsightly. In the past, it was common to surgically strip the leg veins to remove the veins, and therefore, the problem. This invasive procedure is seldom used in this day and age. Instead, a less invasive process called ambulatory phlebectomy (or micro-phlebectomy) is used to remove the problem veins. A third treatment involves laser or radio frequency to destroy the source of high vein pressure.

Micro-phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a tiny incision is made where the vein bulges. The surgeon will then use a hook – similar to a crochet needle – to remove the vein. Any remaining pieces of the vein will wither away, leaving only healthy veins to properly function in the leg.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT or EVLT) uses a laser fiber to deliver laser energy to heat and seal off and prevent blood flow through the affected veins. This treatment is more effective than traditional stripping of varicose veins because it is unlikely that new veins will grow in place of the ablated or closed veins. Unfortunately, large veins, winding veins, or veins too close to the surface of the skin cannot be treated with Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT or EVLT).

Similar to ELT is VNUS Closure, which uses a radiofrequency generator to close the vein with heat. This procedure can be used for abnormal perforating veins.

Smartlipo, a laser body sculpting procedure, is a highly-effective option for firming up those pouches of fat that just don’t seem to want to tone with exercise or diet. This lipolysis system is best used on smaller areas, areas that liposuction cannot reach, such as the chin, neck, and arms.

This type of body sculpting is extremely precise because it makes use of lasers to pinpoint problem areas and melt away fat cells forever. Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure that is safer than liposuction.

A laser is directed through a cannula, which is a small tube, just under the skin to the problem area. The energy emitted from the laser causes the fat cells to rupture. When this occurs, the tissues and blood vessels coagulate instantaneously. The blood vessels are closed off, preventing excessive bleeding, swell, or bruising, which may happen in traditional liposuction procedures. The process induces a collagen retraction, causing the tissues to tighten and shrink.

Because of this method is minimally invasive and the blood vessels coagulate immediately, there is a much smaller recovery time with Smartlipo as compared with liposuction. Patients are able to return to work, exercise, and other regular activities much more quickly than with other surgeries. Some patients use this lipolysis system in conjunction with liposuction to maximize

In addition to a quicker recovery time as compared with traditional methods of cellulite treatment, Smartlipo is also safer. The procedure is gentler and the cannula smaller. Patients only need a local anesthesia for the treatment, which lessens the chance of side effects.

CoolSculpting uses the science of Cryolipolysis™ to destroy fat cells, but what exactly is Cryolipolysis™?

This procedure destroys fat cells without chemicals or surgery. The process will cause the cells to break down. There is no damage to other tissues, cells, or organs.

The science of Cryolipolysis™ was uncovered by two dermatologists, Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. Rox Anderson. The two worked at Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine.

Cryolipolysis™ is a simple, non-invasive process that begins by applying controlled cooling precisely to a targeted area. The cooling penetrates the skin and reaches the fat layer. This procedure continues for a specified amount of time – just long enough to damage the fat cells. The body will then naturally remove these damaged cells over the next several months, resulting in a twenty-forty percent reduction of fat.

You may wonder exactly what your body does with the damaged fat cells. The answer is quite simple. The fat cells will slowly release lipids, which are molecules like fats, oils, and waxes. These molecules travel through the lymphatic system and are eliminated, much like fat intake from food might. Then the affected fat cells will be digested by inflammatory cells, causing the reduction in the size of the fat layer.

Because Cryolipolysis™ uses a cooling, rather than heating as method of cell death, it is does not have a negative affect on surrounding cells and tissues. It is a selective process that targets only fat cells.

CoolSculpting is right for you if you are within ten to fifteen pounds of your ideal weight, but have remaining fatty bulges or bumps that you want reduced. The process is virtually painless and does not involve any surgery, chemicals, or medication. There are only minor, temporary side effects and no downtime, allowing you to return to your normal schedule directly following the treatment.

Get ready for spring, be able to wear your skinny jeans, and flaunt your new look in swimwear with this easy choice in fat reduction.
